Cylinder eyes and how to treat it

The cylindrical eye has the medical term astigmatism. The term refers to the condition of the eyes that have blurred and shaded vision because the shape of the cornea or lens is not completely convex. The most common signs and symptoms felt by people with cylindrical eyes are blurred or shaded vision. Patients become often squinting when looking far or near. In addition, sufferers usually complain of difficulty reading small writing. Other symptoms that are often complained of are headaches, eye strain, and fatigue after reading or using a computer. In mild cylindrical eye disorders, vision problems may not occur significantly. Unfortunately, if the cylinder eyes are suffered by children, they will most likely not realize it. This might happen because children's knowledge about an object is not perfect. In children, the symptoms of a cylindrical eye can be the difficulty they focus on writing in the book they are reading. They may also experience headaches, fatigue, and eye strain.

Cause of Cylinder Eyes

The eye has several key components in order to see well. One of them is the optical system of the eye which consists of the cornea of ​​the eye and the lens. The two work together to make the light come into focus forming a perfect image on the retina. In patients with cylindrical eyes, corneas experience imperfections in shape. The cornea should have a perfect convex shape, resembling a curve in the ball. In a cylindrical eye, the eyeballs are similar to a rugby ball. Flawed imperfection on the lens can also cause cylindrical eyes. When the convex formed is not perfect or uneven, a cylindrical eye occurs. Because, light entering from the cornea can not focus on a single point in the retina so as to make vision blurry. In addition to the form defects that are usually acquired at birth, the following conditions can cause cylindrical eyes:
  • Infection that results in scarring of the cornea.
  • Perform eye surgery that causes changes in the cornea.
  • Swelling, thinning, or changes in the cornea.
  • Conditions that affect the eyelid, making the cornea disrupted.

Treatment Can Be Done

The following methods can be used in order to improve vision disturbed by cylinder eyes.

  • Wearing glasses

    • Glasses for this condition use specially designed lenses. Glasses are the easiest way to correct blurred or shaded vision due to cylinder eyes.

  • Use contact lenses

    • The principle of contact lenses is actually the same as glasses. The right choice between glasses or contact lenses depends on the taste of the patient. So as not to choose the wrong, be sure to consult with an eye doctor.

  • LASIK Operations

    • Through the LASIK procedure, the shape of the cornea is changed by laser. Initially the surface layer of the cornea is opened (flap) using a special tool called keratom. Then the laser is used to change the shape of the corneal layer below the layer that was opened earlier. The flap is then closed again.

  • LASEK Operations

    • This procedure is almost the same as LASIK, but the flap is made thinner, only as thick as the epithelial layer.

  • Photorefractive keratectomy (PRK)

    • Through this PRK procedure, the epithelial layer is removed without making a flap. After LASIK and LASEK surgeries are discovered, this procedure is rarely used.
